Reminder: Submit Public Safety Officer Benefit Reimbursement Requests by July 31
The PSOB program reimburses cities for health, salary, and treatment costs related to duty-disabled police officers and firefighters, but requires specific documentation and support programs to qualify.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) administers the Public Safety Officer Benefit (PSOB) Program, which reimburses cities for certain costs tied to police officers and firefighters. This includes full reimbursement of health insurance continuation costs for duty disabled officers and firefighters, as well as salary continuation, benefit continuation, and psychological treatment not covered by insurance.
To qualify for reimbursement from the PSOB, employers must offer police officers and firefighters one or both of the following:
- Annual wellness training.
- An employee assistance or peer-support program.
To apply for reimbursement, cities must:
- Submit an application in the online tool.
- Acknowledge compliance with Minnesota Statutes, section 299A.465.
- Provide required document such as pay stubs, health insurance invoices, treatment bills, and communications from the Public Employees Retirement Association.
The deadline to submit reimbursement requests for the 2026 fiscal year (July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026) is July 31, 2026.
