A New Option for CDL Instruction
Guest post by Troy Walsh, LMCIT loss control consultant
If your city has tried to hire staff who need a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in recent years, you already know the licensure process has gotten more complicated and expensive.
Many cities are struggling to pay for the newly required classes, extended travel, and less efficient work. As a result, the issue has become a frequent topic of discussion among communities working to hire staff without a CDL or looking to upgrade their CDL classification.
There’s good news: the Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) has developed a CDL Behind-the Wheel Instructor Workshop to help cities take control of the training process—and the costs. This workshop is designed to equip your staff with the instructional skills, teaching methods, and evaluation techniques needed to provide in-house CDL training. Instead of relying on third-party providers, your city can build its own capacity to train drivers, saving money and tailoring the training so that its relevant to your team’s day-to-day operations.
Could your city host a regional CDL training course? Hosting can significantly cut costs while providing more targeted, efficient instruction. In many cases, internal training proves more effective, more relevant to your operations, and makes the most of your already experienced and knowledgeable staff.
