City of Lanesboro Honored with 2025 LMC City of Excellence Award
The City of Lanesboro received the League of Minnesota Cities 2025 City of Excellence Award for the under 5,000 population category Thursday at the League’s Annual Conference in Duluth. Lanesboro was honored for its “Lanesboro Legion Lights” project.
The Lanesboro Legion Lights is a grassroots initiative that has transformed Sylvan Park into a dazzling winter holiday destination. Led by local volunteers in collaboration with the city of Lanesboro and the Henry M. Guttormson Post #40 American Legion, the project aims to bring joy to residents, support local businesses, and boost tourism during the offseason.
The committee behind the project oversaw planning, fundraising, and implementation, relying entirely on community donations, sponsorships, and volunteer efforts. Their goal: create a holiday lights display that brings people together and sparks local pride.
According to the city’s award submission, the project has been a resounding success. It has attracted visitors from neighboring towns, increased foot traffic to local businesses, and provided a festive, family-friendly space for residents to gather during the darkest months of the year. The effort has also generated positive media coverage, elevating Lanesboro’s visibility as a winter destination.
While the project is resource-intensive and dependent on weather, it has laid a sustainable foundation for growth, with many of the decorations and lights designed for reuse in future seasons. Residents and visitors alike have embraced the display as a new annual tradition, reinforcing Lanesboro’s strong sense of community.
The City of Excellence Awards are given annually by the League of Minnesota Cities in three population categories and one topical category. The awards recognize cities for outstanding programs or projects. Each winning city will receive a plaque, a check for $1,000, and recognition in League publications and promotional activities throughout the coming year.
