Public safety agencies focus on officer recruitment and retention, but the other “R,” those officers nearing the end of their careers, can be overlooked. Retirement is oftentimes one of the most overlooked transitions in one’s life that comes with an expectation of relaxation, fun, and happiness. However, it can be a particularly stressful period in an individual’s life, especially those in public safety who have devoted their career to serving others. In too many cases, the individual’s identity and sense of self may be directly tied to the job they performed. When this employment ceases to exist, the individual may experience negative reactions, including those related to their mental health and wellness. Agencies that want to strive for the optimal holistic approach to wellness should incorporate retirement planning as a part of their training and corresponding wellness services. This may include financial planning, as well as identifying other hobbies and interests that the individual can devote their time and energy to after retirement.
