Track Overview

Designed to meet the needs of city staff in a variety of key roles, Loss Control Workshop sessions are divided into tracks. Stick with your area of expertise, or pick and choose sessions based on areas you would like to learn more about. All sessions are open to any attendee.

Join us for fast-paced sessions designed for clerks, administrators, and other city staff. We are digging into election security, residential zoning, cyber attack prevention, Open Meeting Law, and more — allowing city employees in any role to expand their loss control toolbox.

    Election Security: What You Need to Know 

    Join experts from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office to prepare for the 2026 election year. The session will provide a risk overview, steps to mitigate risks at polling locations, recent lessons learned, and current best practices in election security. You will leave with a clear understanding of what a secure, trustworthy election process looks like — and why it matters to Minnesota.

    Better Work Comp Results: Loss Control Strategies + Claim Insights

    Improving workers’ compensation outcomes requires more than reacting to claims — it takes a proactive, strategic approach. In this session, LMCIT Loss Control and Workers’ Compensation teams will outline four foundational elements that drive better results: managing experience modifications (e-mods), implementing effective return-to-work programs, maintaining clear job descriptions, and fostering engaged safety committees.

    Evidence Collection and Preservation

    Gain a clear understanding of what happens to evidence after it leaves an officer’s hands—and why their role is critical. This session covers the full “life cycle” of property and evidence, from collection and packaging through transport, submission, storage, retention, and final disposition. By the end, officers will understand how their actions impact the entire evidence process and how proper handling protects investigations, victims, and your agency.

    Concept to Practice: How Top Performing Agencies Are Advancing Organizational Wellness and Cultures of Learning

    This session will highlight practical strategies you can take back to your agency. We will also explore creative ways agencies are overcoming barriers to success.

Public Works and Parks & Recreation Track

    Driving Success: Building Your In-House CDL Pipeline 

    This session offers a comprehensive roadmap for creating and sustaining a successful in-house Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) development program. Learn about regulatory requirements, designing effective training modules, and leveraging agency resources to build a cost-effective, continuous pipeline of professional, safety-certified drivers tailored to your fleet’s needs.

    Electrical Safety: NFPA 70E Requirements and Contact Release Training

    Nearly all maintenance workers must follow OSHA rules related to electrical safety. NFPA 70E – 2024 sets the standard for electrical safety and applies to workers exposed to electrical hazards on the job. This session will review the standard’s requirements, its importance, and key compliance components.

    Extreme weather events, wellness, and auto repair costs are prominent in insurance discourse today, but what events drive the largest losses for the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust? This session will take an in-depth look at LMCIT loss trends and explore the causes behind our most frequent and costly claims.

Safety Committees Track

Minnesota cities face increasing workplace safety responsibilities, and strong internal safety committees are one of the most effective ways to reduce risk before incidents occur. Learn more about how safety committees function and help cities improve employee safety, lower workers’ compensation claims, strengthen compliance with regulations, and foster a proactive safety culture that protects both staff and public resources. All city employees are encouraged to attend!

    Safety Committees That Make a Difference

    Learn how an effective safety committee helps keep your workplace safe, compliant, and proactive. This session covers MN OSHA requirements, member roles and responsibilities, and best practices for conducting productive meetings. It also highlights the committee’s critical role in incident investigations and how their findings can lead to meaningful improvements and help prevent future incidents.

    Using Claim Trends to Drive Safety Improvements

    Uncover key patterns in claims by looking at injury and loss data. By examining the frequency, severity, and root causes behind claims, you will learn how to translate trends into focused safety initiatives that reduce risk and improve workers’ compensation outcomes.

    JHAs Done Right: Turning Hazard Awareness into Injury Prevention

    A solid Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) helps prevent injuries before they happen. This session introduces what JHAs are, demonstrates how to perform them effectively, and explains why they are essential for building a stronger, more proactive safety culture.

    2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
    Using Mock OSHA Inspections to Improve Your Safety Program

    Cities face increasing safety risks, regulatory requirements, and rising insurance costs – making OSHA compliance more critical than ever. This session will prepare you for what to expect during an OSHA visit and demonstrate how a thorough mock OSHA inspection can help identify hazards, improve compliance, and reduce risk. Gain actionable insights to strengthen workplace safety and minimize liability.

Continuing education credits

The following credits have been approved for 2026: 

  • Peace officers can earn 3 POST credits for attending the morning Police Track. 
  • Wastewater operators can earn 2.5 hours of indirect contact hours for attending the morning Public Works & Parks and Recreation track, and an additional 3 credit hours for attending the afternoon Safety Committees track. 5.5 indirect hours total.
  • Water operators can earn 3 hours of credit for attending the morning Public Works & Parks and Recreation track, and an additional 3 credit hours for attending the afternoon Safety Committees track. 6 credits total.
  • Insurance agents/adjusters can earn 2.75 credits for attending a morning track, and 3.0 credits for attending one of the afternoon tracks in full. 5.75 hours total. 

Cancellation policy

Cancellations must be sent via email to [email protected] seven (7) business days prior to the workshop. No refunds will be made for cancellations received after this date.

If you are unable to attend, please consider sending a substitute. Substitutions are permitted up to the day of the event. Please notify staff at the check-in desk of any on-site substitutions.
