Member Employee or Official Sought for League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust Board Position
The League of Minnesota Cities Board of Directors is seeking an employee or official from a member of the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust to fill a vacancy on the Trust’s Board of Trustees. Trustees may serve up to four three-year terms. The appointment will be effective on Jan. 7, 2027.
Background
Board of Trustee members are appointed by the League Board of Directors. Trustees must be from a city or entity that is a member in the Trust. The vacant position is open to any member employee or official.
Responsibilities
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Trust and acts as a representative of the entire membership. The Trust Board’s responsibilities include:
- Overall management and policy direction.
- Setting rates.
- Establishing a budget.
- Overseeing investments.
- Approving coverage changes.
- Reviewing and approving audits.
While experience with the insurance industry is not necessary, some of the material in a Board packet can be relatively technical and extensive. Trustees are encouraged to take advantage of educational opportunities, and to ask questions at Board meetings and otherwise.

Meetings
The Trust Board typically meets in-person four times per year, with an overnight stay. Meetings generally begin with a workshop at noon on Thursday, followed by the Trust Board meeting on Friday morning, concluding by noon. Meeting dates for the following year are typically scheduled during the summer. The 2027 meetings are scheduled for Jan. 7–8, June 10–11, Aug. 12–13, and Oct. 14–15.
Compensation
The Trust reimburses Trustees for travel expenses to attend meetings. In addition, Trustees who are not compensated by their employer for time spent attending Trust Board meetings are eligible for a $100 per diem payment for each meeting day.
Selection criteria
The League Board recognizes the importance of maintaining a Trust Board that is representative of the Trust membership. In addition to evaluating the skill and competency of prospective candidates, the League Board considers geographic location, size of city or entity, an applicant’s position within their city or entity, League experience and involvement, and positions held in other organizations. Consideration will also be made to ensure Trust Board members reflect the makeup of LMCIT program membership.
