Invite Your City’s Students to Enter the Mayor for a Day Essay Contest

October 12, 2020

The deadline to enter the contest is Dec. 7.

The Mayor for a Day Essay Contest is back — and more flexible than ever — to help students participate from a variety of learning environments.

Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders can once again answer the prompt, “What would you do if you were mayor for a day?” for a chance to win $100 and recognition in Minnesota Cities magazine. If a student from your city is selected, we will notify your city hall as well, so you can consider opportunities for recognition.

The deadline for submissions is Dec. 7.

New this year:

  • Students and parents/caregivers can now submit essays via an online form, a PDF attachment, or the mail.
  • A brief primer introduces the important work of being mayor for students to review before writing their essays.
  • A letter template can help your city’s mayor promote the contest to local educators.
  • An extended deadline gives teachers and parents/caregivers more time to incorporate the essay into lesson plans or extracurricular activities.
