Loss control consultants provide a wide range of services to cities

LMCIT consultants provide assistance in evaluating your city’s practices and overall liability regarding employee health and safety programs, as well as on-site assistance on police, fire, and employment liability. This complements guidance from the League’s HR & Benefits staff, LMCIT employment attorneys, and public safety project coordinator.

Employee Health & Safety

LMCIT consultants work with your city to reduce employee injuries. A five-year workers’ compensation loss analysis identifies trends, and guides efforts toward addressing common trends such as sprains and strains, slips, trips, and falls, and working on and around equipment. Using an aggregate analysis, consultants can compare your city to cities in the area, cities with similar populations, and cities with similar operations.

Sanitary Sewer Survey

This includes a detailed system evaluation and provides best practices for policy, maintenance, and inspection. These evaluations are an excellent place to start when making short- and long-term decisions about the sanitary sewer system.

Public Works Ergonomic Survey

This includes a survey and inventory of some of the tools and equipment that are available to public works staff. Consultants provide input and suggestions on better tools/equipment and/or procedures to make certain high risk public works tasks safer in an attempt to reduce ergonomic (pushing, pulling, lifting, overexertion, etc.) types of injuries.

Public Works — Slip, Trip, and Fall Survey

This includes a discussion and survey of various slip, trip, and fall risks that are in the area of public works. There are a host of things that contribute to these types of injuries that include: footwear, working from heights, ladder safety, housekeeping, etc.

Police Department — Slip, Trip, and Fall Survey

This survey is specific to the area of law enforcement, and the things that can lead to slip and fall injuries. The survey includes a discussion of things that contribute to these types of injuries that include: footwear, working in icy conditions, getting in/out of squad cars, etc.

Fire Department — Slip, Trip, and Fall Survey

This survey is similar to the public works and police slip, trip, and fall surveys, but is more specific to fire departments. The discussion will include: footwear, working from heights, ladder safety, working in icy conditions, housekeeping in the fire hall, etc.

Fire/EMS Survey (WC and GL)

This Workers’ Compensation part of the survey includes a discussion and overview of the department and how it functions. The discussion will also include manual material handling exposures and controls. Finally, the survey will address general safety, training, and accident reporting. The General Liability portion of the survey addresses hiring practices, fleet safety, and general policies and procedures.

Police Liability Survey

This survey will include a discussion on such areas as: use of force, vehicle operations, employment practices, evidence rooms, vulnerable persons, and jail/detention operations.

Property and Vacant/Abandoned Building Survey

A property survey involves a walk-through of the buildings to make recommendations on how the city can reduce potential property and liability exposures. This survey includes areas such as fire safety, Life Safety Code, and general liability. Vacant and abandoned properties pose both public and attractive nuisance exposures and can lead to unexpected property loss of metals such as copper and subsequent damage to the building.

Special Event Reviews

Consultants provide loss control assistance for special events, including fireworks, parades, celebrations, and festivals.

Fleet Safety Assistance

This detailed survey addresses best practices for fleet operations from transit to maintenance vehicles.
