Community Relations: Media Relations

Examples of behavior:

  • Social media and news outlets catering to ideologically specific audiences are fueled by hyper-partisan politics at the federal and state levels.
  • Community meetings and forums where city issues are discussed and debated often intensify extreme political tensions and lead to uncivil behavior.

The media may tend to focus on controversial or politically charged aspects of stories (and the resulting uncivil behavior) and less frequently on reporting positive stories of city or county accomplishment. As a result, residents become cynical about the purpose and value of city government.
