Political Issues: Highly Partisan or Ideological Councilmembers

Examples of Behavior:

  • Community members or elected officials are so committed to their principles and beliefs that they feel justified in using a win-at-all-costs approach.
  • Some local governments which have usually worked to solve practical, local issues in a non-partisan way (think streets, sewers, sidewalks, police, fire, etc.), are now experiencing partisan agendas and the involvement of political parties in local elections.

Concern:
Highly partisan councilmembers may spend more time emphasizing a system of beliefs or playing to a constituent base than they do in working constructively on local issues.
