Community Relations: Need for Better Civic Engagement with the Community

Examples of behavior:

  • Tension arises in the community, either because there is no clear vision for the community or there are competing visions for the future. This tension then flares up in the political arena in very personal and hurtful ways. This seems to be especially common in developing areas around metropolitan edges when development pressures begin to clash with the existing lifestyle.

It is important to note that conflict itself is not always the problem; how conflicting viewpoints are expressed can mean the difference between civil and uncivil exchanges.
