Your city has a voice! Join hundreds of your city colleagues and make sure city priorities are heard this March at the Capitol.

2018 Legislative Conference for CitiesNew for 2018! Come to St. Paul early to get tips on how you can advocate effectively on behalf of your city during a session at the League on Wednesday, March 21. Also on Wednesday, you'll have the opportunity to tour the recently renovated State Capitol and connect with legislators, city colleagues, and League staff during a pre-event reception Wednesday evening at the state Capitol.

On Thursday morning, the League's intergovernmental relations (IGR) staff will take you through the ins and outs of the 2018 session and explain how city priorities are faring so far. You'll hear from legislative and city leaders about several proposals to limit city decision-making authority through preemption in a number of policy areas—and effective ways you can advocate for local control. Then, get an outsider's perspective on the legislative session and likely outcomes from journalists who cover Minnesota government and politics.

During the afternoon, draw on all you learned during the conference as you meet with your state legislators to talk about issues impacting your city and advocate for city priorities.

During this conference you will:

  • Learn how city legislative priorities are faring at the Capitol this session
  • Hear from state policymakers on the impact many legislative proposals will have on cities
  • Get prepared to advocate for cities
  • Build relationships with your state legislators during afternoon visits
  • Increase the visibility of Minnesota cities as key partners in policymaking
  • Tour the recently renovated State Capitol

It’s never too early to schedule a meeting with your legislators! Start planning your trip to the Capitol by arranging a time to meet with your legislators during the 2018 Legislative Conference.

Need contact information for your legislators? Visit the Minnesota Senate website and the Minnesota House of Representatives website to find their information.

Tips for getting in touch with your legislators:

  • Calendars fill up quickly so contact your legislator as soon as possible to schedule a meeting. Try to schedule afternoon appointments between 1-4:30 p.m. so you can participate in the morning program and take full advantage of the day!
  • If this is the first time you’re meeting with your legislators, try setting up a meeting through their legislative assistant. You can find assistants’ phone numbers on the legislators’ webpages (use links above to get to their state webpages)
  • Can’t find details for someone’s legislative assistant? Try calling your legislator before emailing them—people tend to have more luck when setting up meetings over the phone
  • Schedule more time with your legislators! Come down early and invite your legislators on Wednesday for the evening reception at the Rathskeller Cafe at the State Capitol
