Understanding the diversity of our leaders can help us respond to future workforce needs, nurture efforts to increase equity and inclusion in our businesses and institutions, and more.
The League partnered last year with researchers at Minnesota Compass to survey and interview city officials around the state for a project to build understanding of who Minnesota leaders are. Specifically, the goal was to get a clearer picture of the diversity of leaders in government, business, and nonprofit sectors.
Importance of the project
Leaders shape our institutions. They define organizational culture and make decisions that have long-standing and wide-ranging impact on people and communities. It matters that these leaders reflect and respond to the diversity of those they employ and serve.
Understanding the diversity of leaders can help us respond to future workforce needs, nurture efforts to increase equity and inclusion in our businesses and institutions, and strengthen social, economic, and cultural ties that make Minnesota unique.
Resources now available
So, do our leaders reflect Minnesota’s diversity? Minnesota Compass and others have teamed up to answer this question. The new Who Leads in MN? section on their website has data, analysis, resources, and stories to inform and inspire.
With support from the Bush Foundation — and in partnership with the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, the League of Minnesota Cities, and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce — Minnesota Compass and Wilder Research collected data from leaders in the nonprofit, government, and business sectors to better understand who leads and how our institutions are developing talent.
The “spark change” section provides inspiration by telling stories of communities and organizations that are championing diverse and inclusive leadership, and also links to the Minnesota Compass racial equity resource directory and brand-new leadership development program directory. This resource details leadership development programs available both across the state and nationally for emerging and current Minnesota leaders. Search for the program that best fits your needs or suggest a program to be added.
