Final Police and Fire Aid Amounts Announced

October 3, 2022

These aid programs assist with the cost of public safety pensions.

Last week, the Minnesota Department of Revenue (DOR) posted the 2022 Police and Fire State Aid amounts. These two programs provide important resources to assist with the pension costs of public safety employees.

Fire State Aid

Fire State Aid helps subsidize pension costs for local governments and fire relief associations. A fire department’s authorized representatives must submit Form FA-1, Fire State Aid Application, to the DOR by March 15 each year to avoid losing part or all of its aid for the year. In 2021, the DOR distributed $39.7 million in Fire State Aid and initially for 2022, that will increase to $42.4 million. The majority of 2022 Fire State Aid payments were made by Oct. 1. Payments are made directly to the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) when departments participate in PERA’s statewide volunteer firefighter plan. If your fire department has a subsidiary duly incorporated firefighters’ relief association, Fire State Aid must be transmitted to the treasurer of the relief association within 30 days of the date it is received by the municipality.

If a Fire State Aid payment is listed as delayed, this means that the fire relief association’s reporting requirements with the Office of the State Auditor haven’t been completed and the department will need to contact the Office of the State Auditor for next steps. Payments will be released as the requirements are met and paid on the next payment date of Nov. 15, March 15, or June 15. The list posted on the Fire State Aid webpage will be updated on or before each payment date.

Police State Aid

Police State Aid helps subsidize pension costs for local governments. A police department’s authorized representative must submit Form PA‑1, Certification of Peace Officers, to the DOR by March 15 each year to avoid losing part or all of its aid for the year. In 2021, the DOR distributed $91.2 million in Police State Aid, and for 2022, that amount will increase to $96.8 million. All 2022 Police State Aid payments were made by Oct. 1.
