Skills for Communicating Effectively in a Crisis

When a crisis situation erupts in your city, it’s typically an all-hands-on-deck situation. At the time, there are specific and essential communication skills and roles for mayors and council members to consider. Participants learned how to prepare for the unexpected and work together as city leaders to communicate effectively to various audiences. Please note: this session complements information learned in the Skills for Communicating Effectively in a Crisis MemberLearn course.

Negotiation and Problem-Solving Skills for Elected Officials

People can enter negotiations armed with emotionally charged positions — defining what they want and making assumptions about the other parties’ motivations and needs. Often, the default approach is for everyone to stick tight to their own positions. This posturing dynamic fosters adversarial relationships that become difficult to overcome and ultimately hurt long-term success.

This course covered how to gather information, identify underlying interests, and develop a problem-solving strategy that is based on a realistic assessment of what is most important to all sides. Building transferable skills, you will enhance your ability to work more effectively with other city leaders, different government entities, contractors, and members of the public.

Janel Anderson shared her extensive knowledge of neuroscience to lead you to a deeper understanding on how to better empower people, minimize uncertainty, and celebrate successes while taking the leap into changes big and small.
