The League tool kit has been updated to reflect changes that were made to the law during the 2010 legislative session.

Last year after the League and other stakeholders secured legislation that created the Voluntary Statewide Volunteer Firefighter Retirement Plan, the League produced a tool kit to assist cities with evaluating whether to join the plan and to walk municipalities through the steps necessary to join.
After the plan went “live” in January of this year, a number of cities expressed concern that the plan offered too few benefit levels. Moreover, the range of benefit levels seemed appropriate, but moving from one benefit level to the next was too large a jump for some city budgets. In response, the League worked with other stakeholders, including the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA), to secure legislation that expands the number of benefit levels within the plan. The changes were enacted as part of the 2010 omnibus pensions bill, Chapter 359.
The League has updated the tool kit to reflect these changes. Cities and volunteer firefighters are encouraged to review the revised tool kit and to consider whether the plan would make sense for their firefighters and community.
