Centennial Celebration Highlights

By Susan Schoepke

Three-tiered white cake with maroon ribbon and gold The League of Minnesota Cities (LMC) and its members celebrated 100 years of collaboration, dedication, hard work, public service, and innovation on June 19 at the Union Depot in St. Paul. LMC 2012-2013 President Betsy Hodges kicked off the event by leading everyone in a song of “Happy Birthday” to the League. The evening was a great celebration of all that Minnesotans can accomplish when we work together and of all the challenges the League and its member cities have worked together to conquer. Here are a few special moments from the night. For more photos from the event, as well as stories from our first 100 years, don’t forget to visit the League’s centennial blog at www.minnesotacities.blogspot.com. Were you in this re-creation of the League’s original 1913 annual conference photo? Find it on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MinnesotaCities and tag yourself! The League’s original 1913 group photo was taken just down the street from the Union Depot in Rice Park. We’ve outgrown that space in the last 100 years (the 1913 photo had 114 delegates, while we estimate there are about 400 of you in this photo), but the space has also grown (the tiny trees in the 1913 photo now tower above the park).
