and Analysis

Research & Information Service
The League's Research and Information Service is a clearinghouse of information on local government that produces, collects, and conveys information to help members navigate the challenges and opportunities they face governing their cities. Staff responds to more than 6,000 requests for information from members each year. They produce the Handbook for Minnesota Cities -- the most comprehensive reference on city government available for elected and appointed officials across Minnesota; as well as information memos that discuss practical topics in depth, such as paying city claims or running council meetings. Policy Analysis & Data
The League's Policy Analysis Division conducts original research on city issues that are of interest to local and state policymakers, and analyzes the impacts of policies on cities. The division produces the League's annual State of the Cities Report and the property tax report. It collects data about cities, including population, property tax, local government aid, and U.S. Census data. Staff handles inquiries about local government aid and the property tax system, and writes short briefs to serve as additional resources for understanding a range of tax, finance, and other issues.
